The diagnosis is based on clinical features (including proximal muscle weakness and rash), diagnostic imaging (soft tissue calcification), electrophysiological findings, elevated Creatine kinase and the histology of skin and muscle biopsy.

Antinuclear Ab, Extractable nuclear antigen Ab, Jo-1 Ab.

In adults, occult malignancy should be considered.
