Gingivitis

Key Information

Appropriate Tests

Usually associated with poor dental hygiene

Testing is not required unless severe necrotising ulcerative lesions are present.

Gingival scrapings with Gram stain and anaerobic culture may identify Vincent's stomatitis.

See also Vincent's infection, Oral ulcers.

Complications

Periodontal abscess

Testing is not required.

The responsible organisms (aerobes and anaerobes) are reliably sensitive to penicillin or metronidazole.

Dento-alveolar infection

Testing is not required.

The responsible pathogenic bacteria are reliably sensitive to penicillin or metronidazole.

Antibiotics are indicated until definitive drainage is achieved.

Tooth abscess

As for dento-alveolar infection.

Predisposing factors

Neutropenia

Neutrophil dysfunction
