Gonococcal infection

Manifestations

Appropriate Tests

 

Urethral, cervical, conjunctival, pharyngeal, rectal swabs, as appropriate - Gram stain and culture for Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Genital swab or initial stream urine for PCR testing (Molecular genetics - microbial).

Consider possibility of concurrent HIV infection, Chlamydia trachomatis infection, Syphilis; see also Sexually transmitted diseases.

Urethritis, cervicitis

Synovial fluid examination - microscopy and culture; Blood culture.

Disseminated infection

Blood culture.
