Manifestations:

  • Microangiopathic haemolysis
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Haemoglobinuria
  • Renal failure - acute

Full blood count, Blood film, Platelet count, Creatinine, Urea, Electrolytes.

Causes:

 

Infection, especially

  • Shigella sp
  • Shiga toxin - producing Escherichia coli .

Faeces MCS and antigen.

 

Molecular genetics - microbial for Shiga toxin.

Drugs, including cyclosporine
