Pyogenic infection, especially

  • Streptococcus 'milleri'
  • Klebsiella spp.
  • Polymicrobial infection

MCS pus - obtained by aspiration under diagnostic imaging guidance. Blood culture, Full blood count, C-Reactive protein, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate; Aspartate aminotransferase, Alanine aminotransferase, Alkaline phosphatase.

Amoebic infection

If amoebic abscess is suspected in a patient from an endemic area, Entamoeba Ab (Entamoeba histolytica) should be done urgently to avoid unnecessary aspiration.
