Appropriate Tests

 

Initial clinical assessment; Full blood count, Blood film, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

Viscosity (plasma), occasionally of value. Viscosity whole blood is rarely of value.

Paraproteinaemia, especially

  • Plasma cell myeloma
  • Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia

 

Erythrocytosis (marked), especially

  • Polycythaemia vera

 

Leucocytosis (extreme), especially

  • Acute leukaemia
  • Chronic myeloid leukaemia
