Hypoalbuminaemia

Causes

Appropriate Tests

Protein, Albumin.

Raised globulin suggests the presence of liver disease or other underlying disease process associated with reduced albumin synthesis.

Reduced albumin synthesis

  • Acute phase response

  • Chronic liver disease

See Cirrhosis and Autoimmune hepatitis under Hepatitis.

  • Severe/chronic illness

  • Severe Malnutrition

Increased albumin loss

  • Nephrotic syndrome

  • Protein losing enteropathy

Following plasma/blood loss, including

  • Post-operative

  • Extensive burns

  • Bullous skin lesions
