Hypomagnesaemia should be suspected in patients with hypocalcaemia and/or hypokalaemia not responding to therapy.

Magnesium, Magnesium urine.

Prolonged intravenous therapy

 

Gastrointestinal loss

Magnesium faeces, if documentation required.

  • Diarrhoea

 

Alcoholism

 

Malabsorption

 

Genetic magnesium malabsorption

 

Renal loss, including

  • Renal tubular disorders
 

Diabetic ketoacidosis

 

Hypercalcaemia

 

Drug induced, including

  • Diuretics
  • Cis-platinum
  • Gentamicin
  • Prolonged laxative abuse
  • Cyclosporine
