Latex allergy

Key Information

Appropriate Tests

The diagnosis of latex allergy is based on clinical assessment and Skin prick allergen testing; Allergen specific Immunoglobulin E is of lesser sensitivity.

In view of the risk of systemic reaction, skin prick allergen testing should be carried out only by an experienced practitioner in an appropriate setting.

Health care workers, spina bifida patients and latex industry workers are at high risk.

Occupational health and safety issues should be considered in sensitised health care workers.
