Appropriate Tests

 

If rapid confirmation is required during acute illness: nasopharyngeal aspirate and urine for viral detection (PCR, AG). Culture is rarely performed due to need for specialised tissues for culture.

Measles virus Ab only indicated if the diagnosis is in doubt or in screening contacts of index cases who are unsure of vaccination status, and cannot be vaccinated (ie pregnant women).

Encephalitis

Cerebrospinal fluid examination.

  • SSPE

CSF and serum: Measles virus Ab and Rubella Ab, with comparison of titres.

Cerebrospinal fluid examination for oligoclonal bands.
