Review clinical features, Full blood count, Blood film, White cell count differential, Immunophenotyping.

Physiological

  • Physical stress/vigorous exercise
  • Emotional stress
  • Pregnancy

 

Infection, especially

  • Bacterial
  • Rickettsial diseases
  • Viral (occasionally) eg, Chicken pox, Herpes simplex virus infection

Microscopy and culture of local lesion, body fluid, or blood, as appropriate.

Other inflammation, especially

  • Connective tissue diseases
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Still's disease
  • Polyarteritis nodosa

Tissue necrosis, especially

  • Myocardial infarction
  • Carcinoma
  • Trauma
  • Surgery

Cytokines (eg, G-CSF, GM-CSF) commonly cause neutrophilia and/or monocytosis.
