Appropriate Tests

 

Diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation and imaging, followed by Ovarian biopsy.

Fine needle aspiration biopsy and cyst fluid aspiration is often used when the lesion is cystic and not complex on imaging.

Benign cysts

 

  • Simple and inclusion cysts

 

  • Follicular cysts

 

  • Cystadenomas

 

Endometriosis

 

Borderline (proliferating) tumours, especially

 

  • Serous tumours

 

  • Mucinous tumours

 

Carcinoma, especially 

Preoperatively: blood collected for baseline Tumour markers eg, Carcinoembryonic Ag, CA 125, Inhibin.

Tests performed and followed up as appropriate to the operative findings.

  • Serous cystadenocarcinoma

 

  • Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma

 

Germ cell tumours, especially

Human chorionic gonadotrophin (beta subunit), Alpha-fetoprotein.

  • Teratoma (Dermoid)

 

  • Dysgerminoma

 

Sex cord stromal tumours

 

  • Fibroma/thecoma

 

  • Granulosa cell tumour Inhibin

 

Tubo-ovarian infection
