Appropriate Tests

 

Endoscopic biopsy to exclude neoplasm and to detect Helicobacter pylori.

The organism is detected by histology and the urease test - gastric or duodenal ulcer; culture for susceptibility testing may be indicated in patients with recurrent or non-responsive disease.

Serology for H. pylori is seldom indicated.

The Urease test - breath may be useful to monitor effectiveness of therapy.
