Specific viral serology is rarely indicated, unless Infectious mononucleosis is suspected.

Bacterial infection

Throat swab for culture, if indicated.

  • Streptococcus pyogenes

 

  • Arcanobacterium haemolyticum

 

  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae

  • Corynebacterium diphtheriae

Consult pathologist if diphtheria is suspected, as culture for C. diphtheriae requires special media.
