Appropriate Tests

 

History of risk exposure.

Rabies virus Ab, Cerebrospinal fluid examination.

Tissue biopsy with EM.

Virus detection, culture from infected tissue, eg, brain, cornea, skin biopsy (from nape of neck, above the hair line).

In Australasia, transport of specimens suspected to contain rabies virus requires discussion with regional authorities.

Rabies vaccine can be used for prophylaxis, before and after risk of exposure, but is of no value in clinical rabies.

Note similar investigations and illness occurs in Australian acquired bat associated lyssavirus infections in bat handlers and vets
