Appropriate Tests

 

Semen analysis. Full blood count; Blood group; Syphilis serology (serum or CSF), HIV serology (HIV-1 and HIV-2), Hepatitis B serology (hepatitis BsAg), Hepatitis C serology, HTLV Ab (HTLV-I/II antibodies). Cytomegalovirus Ab - if positive, virus culture is performed on each donation.

If CMV serology is initially negative, it is repeated at 6 months and if seroconversion occurs, viral culture is performed on sperm donations.

If the mother is a known carrier of a genetic disorder for which the carrier state can be identified by molecular genetics testing, this should be performed on the sperm donor.
