Causes

Appropriate Tests

 

Genital swab (urethral) for microscopy and culture (including Neisseria gonorrhoeae).

Urethral swab or initial stream urine for Chlamydia trachomatis nucleic acid and PCR for Neisseria gonorrhoeae; Virus detection, culture (for HSV) if indicated.

Culture for genital mycoplasmas is not routinely performed.

Sexually transmitted diseases, especially

  • Gonorrhoea
  • Chlamydia trachomatis infection
  • Herpes simplex virus infection
  • Trichomonas vaginalis infection
  • Mycoplasma genitalium infection
  • Ureaplasma urealyticum infection
