Specimen:

5 mL blood in lithium heparin tube.

Method:

Gas chromatography.

Reference Interval:

Not detected.

Application:

Detection of ingestion of ethanol as well as other alcohols (methanol, propanol, butanol). This may be suspected because of the history or clinical features.

Interpretation:

Detection of alcohol indicates that it has been ingested.
