Allergen specific immunoglobulin E

Keywords: Radioallergosorbent test

Specimen:

5 mL blood in plain tube

Method:

Immunoassay

Reference Interval:

Methodology dependent.

Application:

Detection of specific IgE antibodies as an adjunct to allergy investigation where skin prick allergen testing is contraindicated, or unsuccessful, or when further interpretation is required. May have positive specific IgE to allergen without reacting to allergen if challenged.

Interpretation:

A positive result to multiple aeroallergens indicates atopy.

In association with a suggestive clinical history, a positive result to a specific allergen supports a causative role for that allergen, especially food allergens.
