Specimen:

5 mL blood in lithium heparin or plain tube.

Special caution should be used to avoid contamination of the specimen with environmental aluminium (check with your laboratory).

Method:

Atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Reference Interval:

< 0.3 µmol/L.

Application:

Monitoring renal dialysis patients. Investigation of dementia, osteodystrophy or unexplained anaemia in renal dialysis patients.

May also be elevated during TPN in neonates.

Interpretation:

Aluminium levels should not exceed 2.0 µmol/L in dialysis patients.
