Amylase urine

Specimen:

Timed or 24 h urine collection with no preservative.

Method:

Spectrophotometry.

Reference Interval:

Method dependent - consult pathologist.

Application:

Rarely indicated.

Suspected acute pancreatitis with normal serum amylase. Persistent, significant elevation of serum amylase if macroamylasaemia is suspected. See Amylase.

Interpretation:

Urine level may be increased in acute pancreatitis at a time when the serum amylase level has returned to within the reference interval.

High serum and low urine amylase levels are seen in macroamylasaemia. Use of an amylase/creatinine clearance ratio is not recommended.
