Bordetella pertussis detection

Specimen:

Nasopharyngeal aspirate or swab.

Method:

NAA.

Application:

Suspected pertussis.

Interpretation:

A positive result confirms a clinical diagnosis of whooping cough.

Nucleic acid detection after PCR amplification is more sensitive than culture. Positive results are more likely within 10-14 days of symptom onset.
