Specimen:

Calculus obtained at endoscopy or open surgery.

Method:

Qualitative tests, X-ray diffraction or spectrophotometry on pulverised, dissolved calculus.

Application:

Rarely of value. May be indicated to confirm suspicion of a pure pigment stone.

Interpretation:

Pure pigment stones are seen in chronic haemolysis.
