Specimen:

5 mL blood in plain tube.

The specimen should be placed on melting ice and transported immediately to the laboratory.

Method:

Immunoassay; functional assay.

Reference Interval:

Consult pathologist.

Application:

Limited use in defining inherited or acquired deficiency.

Interpretation:

Reduced or absent in complement consumption or deficiency. Deficiencies are strongly associated with SLE and other systemic rheumatic diseases.
