Specimen:

24 h urine collection in a copper-free container.

Method:

Atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Reference Interval:

< 1.2 µmol/24h

Wilson's disease: > 1.6 µmol/24h

Application:

Investigation of disorders of copper metabolism, particularly Wilson's disease.

Interpretation:

High urinary copper is found in Wilson's disease and other copper toxicity states, eg, Indian childhood cirrhosis.

It is also increased in other diseases affecting copper excretion, eg, primary biliary cirrhosis.
