Cotinine urine

Specimen:

Random urine.

Method:

Immunoassay, GCMS.

Reference Interval:

Not detected in non-smokers unless in an environment with much cigarette smoke.

Application:

Detection of nicotine intake, usually in patients on a non-smoking programme.

Interpretation:

The test may remain positive for some days after the last cigarette.

Passive smoking does not give rise to high levels, although a trace may be detected.
