Down syndrome antenatal risk test

Keywords: Triple test

Interpretation:

This area is complex with 3 main testing methods.

  1. First trimester – ultrasound (radiology) and serum testing

  2. Non invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) – genetic testing, which can be offered at various gestations from 10 weeks

  3. Second trimester serum testing – now less often done, but still offered in areas where first trimester ultrasound or NIPT not available.

Please refer to the guidelines developed by the Human Genetic Society of Australasia (HGSA) and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) for full details (see reference below).

Pretest counselling and information is important, including for NIPT.
