Gastric biopsy

Specimen:

Endoscopic biopsy or resected specimen.

Method:

Fresh tissue: frozen section, Molecular genetics, Flow cytometry, culture. 

Fixed tissue: light microscopy, Immunohistochemistry, Electron microscopy (special fixative).

Application:

Investigation of polyps, ulcers, gastritis, infections especially Helicobacter pylori and bleeding. 

Surveillance for dysplasia in chronic gastritis. 

Diagnosis of gastric polyps and tumours. 

Interpretation:

Report by pathologist identifies the nature of the lesion sampled.

Tumour type, grade and stage are reported for neoplasms.
