Glucose test strip

Specimen:

Drop of whole blood.

Method:

Spectrophotometry or potentiometry.

Reference Interval:

Fasting: 3.0-5.4 mmol/L.

Application:

Monitoring of glycaemia control in diabetics, usually by the patient.

Monitoring of neonates for Hypoglycaemia (a low level must be validated by laboratory assay).

Test strips should not be used for a GTT, for definitive diagnosis of Hypoglycaemia, or for management of acute Hyperglycaemia.

Interpretation:

Suboptimal diabetic therapy results in periods of hyper- or hypo-glycaemia.
