Haemosiderin urine

Specimen:

Fresh, early morning urine sample.

Method:

Iron stain of centrifuged deposit of urine.

Microscopic examination for intracellular iron-containing granules.

Reference Interval:

Not detected.

Application:

Investigation of possible chronic intravascular haemolysis.

Interpretation:

Haemoglobin in glomerular filtrate is reabsorbed by renal tubular cells and broken down to haemosiderin.

Presence of haemosiderin in uroepithelial cells indicates chronic intravascular haemolysis.
