Hepatitis C genotyping

Keywords: Hepatitis C genotype, HCV

Specimen:

5-10 mL blood in EDTA or citrate.

Method:

Detection of subtype specific mutations (various methodologies) after amplification, amplification using subtype specific primers, nucleic acid sequencing of amplified product if required.

Application:

Pre-treatment evaluation of patients being considered for antiviral therapy.

Interpretation:

Genotyping, together with viral load, is used to determine the appropriate duration of therapy. Infection with genotypes 2 and 3 responds better to antivirals.
