2-5 mL blood in plain tube.

Method:

Immunoassay.

Reference Interval:

Levels vary in childhood according to age and are reduced in the elderly.

Application:

Very limited role in the identification of atopy. May be useful for monitoring allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Determination of dose and response to treatment with anti IgE antibody.

Interpretation:

There is a large overlap between atopic and non-atopic individuals which limits the value of this test.
