Lead urine

Specimen:

24 h urine collection in a lead-free container with HCl (also lead free) as preservative.

Method:

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Reference Interval:

< 0.25 µmol/24 h

Application:

Monitoring the effect of chelation therapy in lead poisoning.

Lead excretion after EDTA infusion is the preferred investigation for past exposure to lead, if blood lead is normal.

Interpretation:

Lead excretion > 0.25 µmol/24 h indicates an increased body burden.
