Magnesium urine

Specimen:

24 h urine collection.

Method:

Spectrophotometry, atomic absorption spectro­photometry.

Reference Interval:

2.5-8.0 mmol/24 h (related to daily intake).

Application:

Confirmation of suspected urinary magnesium loss.

Interpretation:

Decreased urinary magnesium in a patient with Hypomagnesaemia indicates a non-renal cause.
