Phosphate urine

Specimen:

24 h urine collection with HCl as preservative.

Method:

Spectrophotometry.

Reference Interval:

10-40 mmol/24 h (varies with intake and plasma phosphate).

Application:

Only occasionally indicated to identify phosphaturia in hypophosphataemic states.

Interpretation:

High PTH levels and renal tubular disorders will result in relatively increased phosphate excretion.
