Pleura biopsy

Specimen:

Fine needle aspiration biopsy, transthoracic needle biopsy, video-assisted thorascopic biopsy.

Method:

Fresh tissue: microbiological examination.

Fixed tissue: light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy (special fixative), pleural fluid for microbiological examination and cytology.

Application:

For investigation of pleural effusion, empyema, granulomatous disease and tumours.

Interpretation:

Histological examination shows nature of pathologic process;

identification of infecting organisms; and

identification of tumour type, grade and stage.
