Pyruvate kinase

Specimen:

Refer to laboratory.

Method:

Washed red cells are lysed. Assay performed at 37°C and results expressed as enzyme activity per gram of haemoglobin.

Reference Interval:

Check with laboratory (performed by specialised laboratories).

Application:

Investigation of non-spherocytic haemolytic anaemia.

Specific enzyme assay confirms deficiency.

Interpretation:

Low levels confirm red cell pyruvate kinase deficiency.
