Reducing substances faeces

Specimen:

5 g faeces.

Method:

Spot test; chromatography.

Reference Interval:

Negative.

Application:

Diagnosis of sugar intolerance:lactose, sucrose or glucose/galactose.

Although the test is usually done with faecal pH measurement the latter does not provide any additional useful diagnostic information.

Interpretation:

A positive result indicates reduced digestion or absorption of one or more sugars.

False negatives occur eg, if the offending sugar has not been ingested recently.
