Serotonin platelets

Specimen:

5 mL blood in an EDTA tube.

The specimen must be delivered to the laboratory immediately after collection.

Some laboratories measure plasma or blood serotonin but platelets are the preferred specimen.

Method:

HPLC.

Reference Interval:

< 5.4 nmol/10platelets.

Application:

Diagnosis of carcinoid syndrome.

Interpretation:

Patients with carcinoid syndrome show elevation of platelet serotonin.
