Specimen:

5-10 mL blood in plain tube.

Method:

EIA, immunoblotting.

Application:

To support the diagnosis of cysticercosis when suggested by clinical findings and imaging studies.

Interpretation:

A positive index indicates prior exposure to Taerua solium, although patients with other helminthic infections may have cross-reacting antibodies.

The sensitivity of the test is high for patients with multiple cysts, but as low as 30% for patients with single cysts.
