Glandular Abnormalities

Adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS)

AIS presents as groups and strips of abnormal endocervical epithelial cells with rosette formation, crowding and pseudostratification and feathering. LBC preparations demonstrate cells with finely vacuolated cytoplasm and increased N/C ratio. Nuclear membranes vary from smooth to irregular. Chromatin is fine to coarsely granular, evenly distributed and hyperchromatic. Enlarged and pleomorphic nucleoli may be prominent.

Endocervical adenocarcinoma

LBC presentation of endocervical adenocarcinoma is similar to that seen in CP. 3-D cell clusters are well maintained, nuclear features are well preserved, cells are pleomorphic, cytoplasm is vacuolated and there may be variable tumour diathesis.
