Unsatisfactory

Number of cells per slide

LBC slides should contain at least 5,000 well-preserved and well-visualised squamous cells. Slides which do not meet this criterion should be reported as Unsatisfactory for assessment. An adequate endocervical sample is defined as at least 10 well-preserved endocervical or squamous metaplastic cells per slide.

SurePath™ - Unsatisfactory

SurePath™ - Unsatisfactory

This SP preparation contains insufficient squamous cells

ThinPrep® - Unsatisfactory

ThinPrep® - Unsatisfactory

There are insufficient squamous cells in this TP preparation

Obscuring blood/inflammation other

Excessive blood, mucus or inflammatory cells may obscure cellular detail in LBC preparations and when less than 5000 epithelial cells are able to be viewed clearly due to obscuring factors the case should be reported as unsatisfactory for assessment.

SurePath™ - Excess Blood

SurePath™ - Excess Blood

Red blood cells are lysed and largely removed during smear preparation however when excess blood is present lysed red cells may predominate so that insufficient epithelial cells are deposited upon the slide to permit accurate assessment

ThinPrep® - Excess Inflammatory Cells

ThinPrep® - Excess Inflammatory Cells

Inflammatory cells are removed or reduced during LBC smear preparation, however when inflammation is marked inflammatory cells may be so numerous that insufficient epithelial cells are made available for assessment
