Insect sting sensitivity

Appropriate Tests

Skin prick allergen testing with insect venom (eg, bee, wasp) should be performed to confirm sensitivity; these tests must only be performed by experienced practitioners, with resuscitation equipment available.

Skin prick testing helps determine the degree of sensitivity and identifies those patients likely to benefit from desensitisation therapy.

Allergen specific Immunoglobulin E is less sensitive (bee, wasp, jumper ant).

Allergen specific immunoglobulin G titre is not a reliable indicator of response to bee venom immunotherapy and this test should not be performed.
