Appropriate Tests


Aspirated pus (including microscopy for characteristic sulphur granules, Gram stain and modified ZN stain) and aerobic and anaerobic culture (MCS pus) should be transported to the laboratory without delay.

Biopsy - histology including Gram stain, modified ZN stain, culture (especially anaerobic).

Common sites of involvement


  • Cervicofacial
  • Thoracic
  • Abdominal
  • Pelvic
  • Central nervous system

Pus  (aspirate, swab or tissue biopsy) for histology, Gram stain, modified ZN stain and culture (anaerobic and aerobic).

  • Disseminated

Blood culture.
