Appropriate Tests


Pus or aspirate from edge of lesion - Wound swab microscopy and culture.

Blood culture if indicated.

Requiring admission

Consider: Blood culture, Urea, Electrolytes, Creatinine, Glucose, Liver function tests, Full blood count, Ward test urine.

Common pathogens

  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Clostridium perfringens


Antistreptolysin O titre, Anti-deoxyribonuclease B Ab.



Unusual pathogens

  • Vibrio sp (vulnificus, parahaemolyticus)

Predisposing disorders include Cirrhosis, Diabetes mellitus, and tropical marine environments.

  • Aeromonas hydrophila, Shewanella sp, Chromobacterium violaceum


Animal bites

  • Pasteurella multocida
  • Capnocytophaga canimorsus
