CMML is grouped as one of the Myelodysplastic syndromes, see Myelodysplastic syndromes (classification). It is commonly discovered as an incidental finding in older patients with unexplained monocytosis. Neutrophilia, Anaemia or Thrombocytopenia may also be seen. Patients may eventually develop bone marrow failure or transformation into an acute myelomonocytic leukaemia (see Acute leukaemia).

Full blood count, Bone marrow biopsy (where indicated clinically) with Cell immunophenotyping and Cytogenetics - oncology.
