Specimen:

5 mL blood in EDTA tube.

Method:

Fresh blood incubated with supravital stain; blood films examined for HbH inclusions.

Reference Interval:

Not detected.

Application:

Investigation of possible alpha thalassaemia.

Interpretation:

HbH inclusions can be found in the alpha thalassaemia traits and in haemoglobin H disease.

Genetic testing may be indicated for accurate diagnosis and classification.
