Prostate needle biopsy

Varying numbers of thin core biopsy of prostate gland are taken according to clinical indications.

In general sextant biopsy sampling of the right and left anterior, and middle and posterior prostate are undertaken. However, up to 12 biopsies per prostate are not uncommon and occasionally clinicians may target an area noted to be suspicious for carcinoma on previous biopsy.

The core, or cores from each site should be submitted in a separate labelled container.

Histological examination of submitted samples.

IH may be required to confirm a diagnosis for malignancy.

Investigation of elevated serum prostatic specific-antigen and/or clinical features suspicious of prostatic malignancy.
